About me

Music can suggest, without any words, the noise of winds and the bleating of sheep, the neighing of horses and so on and so forth; but it cannot imitate the speech of winds because no such thing exists (CM)

The intention of music is not only to please the ear, but to express sentiments, strike the imagination, affect the mind, and command the passions (FG)

My name is Pablo Tejedor-Gutiérrez, and I was born in Madrid. I work as a musician, playing the historical cello (in all its forms) and the bass viol. As a historian, I have published some articles on Cultural History, Historical Performance and Musicology and given seminars, talks and lectures. I also teach in all these fields.

I welcome you to my website and invite you to look through the diverse sections to learn more about my projects and download my CV or biography by clicking the links under my photo.

Being a historical cellist and gamba player, I usually play music before 1900, trying to have as much as possible an informed performance. Through the research, my colleagues and I can recreate the sound of the past most faithfully and thoughtfully, although playing simultaneously moving and original concerts, with plenty of improvisation and novelty.

I have primarily played in chamber music or orchestral ensembles during my career, although I also periodically perform solo recitals. These three roles offer me excellent possibilities to show the cello's and gamba's vast array of expressions, both as a bass accompanist and a beautiful solo voice.

The music played in these captivating instruments made just from wood with four to seven gut strings is always capable of awakening every feeling and emotion in the listener and us, the players.

Another fantastic idea of the Historically Informed Performance movement is to expand the currently limited canon of composers. In my concerts, you will consistently listen to new pieces by forgotten but extraordinary artists whose voices have been silent for centuries.

I hope you will enjoy visiting this website and meet you soon after one of my concerts or for a music lesson!
